Viktor E. Frankl, a distinguished professor of neurology and psychiatry at the University of Vienna Medical School until his passing in 1997, is renowned as the founder of the Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy. This school, following in the footsteps of Freud’s psychoanalysis and Adler’s individual psychology, is known as logotherapy.
Born in 1905, Dr. Frankl earned Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Vienna. His life took a profound turn during World War II when he endured three harrowing years in Auschwitz, Dachau, and other concentration camps.
Dr. Frankl’s scholarly journey commenced in 1924 with his first publication in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. Over his illustrious career, he authored twenty-six books, translated into nineteen languages, including Japanese and Chinese. His wisdom extended worldwide as a visiting professor at esteemed institutions like Harvard, Duquesne, and Southern Methodist Universities. He received honorary degrees from Loyola University in Chicago, Edgecliff College, Rockford College, Mount Mary College, and several universities in Brazil and Venezuela. Dr. Frankl’s insights were shared through guest lectures at universities worldwide, and he embarked on fifty-one lecture tours within the United States. He also held the prestigious position of President of the Austrian Medical Society of Psychotherapy.
